About the Presentation

The Safety Edge is a relatively low-cost countermeasure that can be applied in both asphalt and concrete paving operations. It is promoted as a solution for reducing the number and severity of rural roadway-departure crashes, but there is little information about its actual effectiveness. To fill this gap, a study by researchers at the the Midwest Transportation Center at Iowa State University evaluated the safety impact of the Safety Edge for construction projects in Iowa and assessed its effectiveness in reducing crashes.

This presentation provided an overview of the project and discussed the results. The presenters reviewed the use of this technology in Iowa and outlined the benefits it has had on transportation safety in the state.


About the Speakers

Dr. Shauna Hallmark is a professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering and the director of the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University. She has served as principal investigator for more than 58 research projects over 16 years through a wide range of sponsors. Dr. Hallmark has conducted a number of research projects related to intersection safety, roadway departure, speed management, and other safety issues at the national, state, and local levels.

Bill Rosener has served as the Executive Vice President of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa (APAI) for the past eight years. During his 31-year asphalt career, he worked as a flagman, raker, roller operator, and paver operator, before eventually becoming an estimator and project manager for the LL Pelling Co. Inc. Rosener received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1989.
