The Minnesota Strategic Highway Safety Plan

About the Presentation

The Minnesota Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) provides insight and direction on how to reduce motor vehicle traffic crashes on all Minnesota roads. Developed in consultation with safety stakeholders from education, emergency medical and trauma services, enforcement, engineering, and other disciplines, the SHSP presents a view of the statewide crash record. It also identifies focus area priorities and strategies to keep moving toward a goal of zero deaths on Minnesota roads. In addition, the SHSP highlights opportunities for collaboration and provides targets and performance measures to chart progress.

This presentation discussed the development of the SHSP and how it is being used to focus safety efforts in the state to maximize the reduction in fatal and serious injury crashes. It also highlighted how the SHSP, Highway Safety Improvement Program, and the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths program support the improvement of safety on all Minnesota roadways.

About the Speaker

Brad Estochen is the state traffic safety engineer at the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). His current responsibilities include managing the Highway Safety Improvement Program, supporting the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths program, and providing traffic safety technical assistance throughout MnDOT. Estochen has been involved in several national projects with TRB, AASHTO, and the SHRP2 program. He has an undergraduate and graduate degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University, is a licensed professional engineer in Minnesota, and holds a professional traffic operations engineer certification from the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
